The Hotel

The Imperial Palace was originally named the Flamingo Capri, and re-opened under that name when Ralph Engelstad, the current owner, purchased the property in 1972. Two years later, the East and North buildings were added, as well as the Shangri-la pool. Finally, in 1979, the Imperial Palace casino opened - the roof is made of traditional blue tile imported from Japan. A year later, another extention to the Imperial Palace opened: the Imperial Theatre showroom. With seating for 850, the showroom is also used for the taping of sports and entertainment specials for network and cable TV broadcasts.
Over the years, the Imperial Palace was extended even further. Here's a rundown:
  • 1981: Another 19-story tower was added with an additional 850 rooms. Also added was the Imperial Palace Auto Collection. More information on this attraction later.
  • 1982: the number of rooms was extended to 1,500.
  • 1986: Tower IV was added, increasing the number of rooms to 2100, 15,000 sq. ft. was added to the casino and the meeting and convention areas were expanded as well.
  • 1987-1989: The 3-phase expansion plan that begin in 1987 ultimately brought the Olympic size swimmingpool (with a two story waterfall, a heated spa and a poolside bar), a new 19 story tower and another casino expansion (including the satelite casino, the race and sports book, health & fitness center and an office complex to the Imperial Palace.
  • In 1992, the race and sports book featured 6 level tiered seating, doubling the previous capacity, with color monitors at every seat.
  • 1993: Last but not least, the full service medical center was opened, available not only to Imperial Palace visitors but to everyone on the Strip.back
